After battling ovarian cancer for the past few years, Edith Layton passed away on June 1st, 2009. As a member of the Avon family for over a decade, she will be sorely missed.
Publisher’s Weekly proclaimed her to be “one of romance's most gifted writers." Her many devoted fans can certainly attest to that statement. Everyone at Avon knew her to be a consummate professional and talented writer, but, more than that, she was a beloved mother and grandmother, whose pride in her family--and her work--always shone through.
As an author, Edith was never afraid to take risks, and her fans adored her for it. But they also looked to her wonderful novels that were testaments to a heartfelt belief in the power of love. Edith lived a full and loving life that many could only dream about.

Thank you for posting this May! Beautiful. There are also some wonderful tributes on Wordwenches.com as well as some pictures on my site and a lovely post on Smartbitchestrashybooks.com -- they are all gems to me. Best, Susie

Ms. Layton wrote one of my favorite romance books, "The Devil's Bargain". I loved how she paired the brooding hero with a fun, down to earth heroine. Her writing sparkled with wit and passion. I already feel the loss of all the wonderful books she left unwritten.

This is such sad news! Edith was a joy of a person and a fabulous writer. She will be missed.

What a wonderful post for such a great person. I never met her, which I am sorry for. But her writing will allow me to get to "know" her now.

Few things were more delightful then heading into a meeting and realizing we would be talking about one of Edith's wild, wonderful, original books. What's better than pirates? Except maybe gypsies.

In one of my first conversations with Edith, we were discussing her outline for an upcoming romance. She told me that her synopsis had plot holes you can swing a cat through. From that moment on, I couldn't help but imagine Edith swinging a cat back and forth whenever we spoke on the phone.

I'm missing Edith dearly. She was one sweet lady. So nice in her emails to me and loved to chat about her books! I missed the last few and so will catch up getting these and not missing TO LOVE A WICKED LORD in November.

One of the best people I have ever known and the consummate beautiful redhead! (Oh, that flaming hair!)
Wonderful writer, kind and generous by nature, so precious and wonderful to know.
Love you, Edith, always.
