Why are paranormals so popular?

I'm sure everyone has their own opinions, but I'll share mine: escapism.

Every once in a while, we all need to put a little distance between ourselves and the craziness going on around us. This is how we stay sane. So, a story where the heroine fights legions of vampires and comes out alive is...sane. Not to mention fun!
